    SCCEFC is a thriving, family-focused, missions focused church with a weekly attendance of 800 plus. It is a North American Chinese church with three languages based congregations of Cantonese, English and Mandarin. The church is centrally located in Calgary, Alberta. Our mission is to be united in love to obey the Great Commandment and to carry out the Great Commission of Jesus Christ by reaching out to people in the Calgary area through such as Evangelism Explosion, Alpha ministries, etc. We have a vital growing children’s ministry. SCCEFC engages in small group ministry in its various fellowship groups. It is largely a bi-cultural Chinese church in North America spanning several generational age groups, with the majority of our current constituency predominantly Cantonese-speaking immigrants. The other two congregations are Mandarin speaking and English-speaking with demographics from toddlers through adults. SCCEFC’s polity is congregational centered on team leadership. Employing team leadership principles and practices, the Senior Pastor will lead a team of pastors and ministers to shepherd and oversee the equipping of the saints in the church, as well as to reach the unchurched in our local community.

    Personal Qualifications

    • Possess the Biblical qualities of leadership as stated in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.

    • Trained in an accredited seminary with the equivalent of and M. Div. degree or above.

    • Minimum of five years of experience in ministering in a bi-cultural Chinese church in North America.

    • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially the ability and demonstrated practice of team leadership in a bi-cultural, multi-staff situation.

    • Excellent communication skills, particularly in preaching the Word of God.

    • Experienced in promoting and leading outreach and missions programs.

    • History of active church membership and participation in a local worshipping community.

    • Regular practice of spiritual disciplines, including prayer, solitude, personal study of the Word.

    • Regular fellowship with a spiritual mentor or partner.

    • Language ability: proficient in speaking Cantonese & English, reading and writing Chinese and English.

    Requirement

    • In agreement with SCCEFC’s statement of faith and willing to abide by the church’s constitution and by-laws.

    Ministry Duties

    a. Provide leadership, vision, and overall direction for the church. The Senior Pastor shall:

    i. Provide spiritual vision and challenge to the Church, the various congregations and the Board.

    ii. Provide leadership to all church boards/teams, participating in meetings when available.

    iii. Be responsible for overseeing the overall ministries and various administrative matters of the local body.

    b. Preach and teach God’s Word

    i. Preach and teach at Sunday worship services, being faithful to Scripture and seeking to help the congregation understand and apply the message to their lives.

    ii. Set aside regular times of study in order to be personally prepared to share God’s Word with others

    iii. In cooperation with the other lead pastors and worship deacons, he shall supervise worship services and visiting speakers.

    c. Actively participate in the life of the church and it members. The Pastor shall:

    i. Be responsible for nurturing the spiritual welfare of the congregation in partnership with the pastoral team.

    ii. Be responsible for the visitation of the sick.

    iii. Perform weddings and funerals for church members, as requested.

    iv. Provide counselling services as needed, referring long term counselling needs to Christian counsellors.

    d. Supervise the paid church staff and team leaders. The pastor shall:

    i. Direct and supervise the pastoral and non-pastoral staff.

    ii. Participate in all hiring decisions for church staff.

    iii. Provide direction and ongoing supervision for paid staff.

    e. Other Guidelines. The pastor shall:

    i. Encourage the development of reproducing leadership through mentoring and discipleship. Seek to delegate appropriate ministry tasks to others in order to help them develop in their areas of spiritual gifts.

    ii. Work to train and delegate leadership in all areas where gifted and leadership exists (Eph 4:12).

  • Reports to: Senior Pastor/Church Board Who are we? South Calgary Chinese Evangelical Free Church (“SCCEFC”) is a thriving, family-focused, missions-focused church with a weekly attendance of over one thousand. It is a North American multicultural church with three congregations of Cantonese, English, and Mandarin. Our demographics range from toddlers through older adults. Not only do the three congregations share a common building, we also share people and resources and so we enjoy the opportunity and challenges of working together as the people of God known as SCCEFC. The successful candidate will be able to work interdependently with these three congregations. Our mission is to be united in love to obey the Great Commandment and to carry out the Great Commission of Jesus Christ by reaching out to people in the Calgary area.

    Summary of Roles and Responsibilities The Operations Officer (“OO”) is a new position at SCCEFC. This position has the potential to evolve to meet the needs of our church operations. Reporting directly to the Senior Pastor and Chairman of the church board, the OO is responsible for:

    • Overall day-to-day operations of SCCEFC;

    • Leadership and management of church support staff; and

    • Articulating a clear vision for the church’s operations and working culture. The OO is a non-voting member of the Church Board, as well as an active member of the Ministry Management Team (MMT).

    Key Accountabilities of the OO:

    1. Office Administration

    • Supervises the office administrative staff.

    • Works closely with Lead Pastors and Office Manager to set objectives and performance evaluations of the office administrative staff.

    • Optimizes office workflow and continuous improvement of office administrative support functions.

    • Develops, implements and maintains effective, efficient and current office procedural manuals.

    • Works with Office Manager to ensure church documents are properly protected.

    2. Information Technology (IT)

    • Supervises IT support personnel to ensure IT infrastructure (including: system hardware, software, network, facilities, data/file storage, backups and support services) meets ministry needs and church potential growth.

    • Ensures backup procedures and disaster recovery plans are properly developed, implemented, documented and tested on a periodic basis.

    3. Facility

    • Supervises facility maintenance teams, including custodian, outside cleaning staff, contractors, etc.

    • Partners with Office Manager and ministry stakeholders (including: pastors, deacons, leaders of various church ministries) to ensure church facilities are properly scheduled, assigned and optimized.

    • Partners with ministry stakeholders to ensure timely facility maintenance, repairs and building projects are budgeted and conducted.

    • Works closely with MMT and ministry stakeholders to conduct short and long-term facility needs analysis and presents results to the Senior Pastor and Church Board.

    • Partners with the Homeless Task Force and other facility related committees to ensure appropriate support is available.

    4. Communication

    • Develops, implements and maintains effective communications strategy.

    • Works closely with MMT, Lead Pastors and various stakeholders to promote external and internal communications of the church that are in line with the Church’s mission, vision, values, strategies, programs and events.

    • Supervises the web support team to promote church ministries and to creatively draw people to Christ through various media.

    • Leads communication effort with all levels of staff to ensure smooth and timely information flow in operational related matters.

    5. Financial

    • Partners with the church board, Treasurer, MMT and stakeholders to develop annual budget for church operational functions.

    • Monitors overall operations budgets and provide timely updates to Senior Pastor and Church Board.

    6. Human Resources (HR)

    • Provides HR support expertise to Senior Pastor and Church Board including recruiting, staff development, and performance management.

    • Ensures church HR records are properly maintained and protected.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum 2-3 years of full-time leadership roles involving people management in a corporate environment, charitable organization, or church.

    • Bachelor degree from an accredited institution in Business, Management, Human Resources or related fields.

    • Strong working experience in key areas, such as: operations of a church, people management, IT and HR.

    • Strong organizational skills, detail oriented and the ability to handle multiple priorities.

    • Enjoys working collaboratively and cooperatively cross multi-cultural groups and cross-congregational members.

    • Proficient in (a) speaking English and Cantonese or Mandarin; and (b) reading and writing in both English and Chinese.

    • Fully-devoted follower of Jesus.

    Key Accountabilities of the English Congregational Lead Pastor

    The English Congregational Lead Pastor works closely with our Senior Pastor and Church Board in creating a vision and strategy that will fulfill our calling as a local church to:

    ● Develop and implement the strategic plans of our congregation, in accordance with our mission and vision statements, for the next part of our journey together as a community who desires to become more cross-cultural in its life and expression in Calgary.

    ● Exercise their gifts of teaching and encouragement through creative and relevant Biblical teaching in the pulpit, as well as in other formal and informal contexts such as seminars, Christian education, and small groups. The successful candidate will be expected to model small group participation and/or leadership. They will also be responsible for the overall ministry of Christian formation for the congregation.

    ● Participate in our corporate worship by guiding Sunday worship ministries in conjunction with the worship teams and in leading the celebration of the Lord’s Supper and baptism. They will also contribute to the planning and celebration of other worship events during the Church calendar year.

    ● Provide pastoral care and oversight to individuals and other ministry groups. Areas of need are pre-marital and marital counseling, spiritual direction in terms of career and family, and anticipation of maturing life events.

    ● Train and encourage existing leaders and participate in reproducing new leaders through mentoring and discipleship; helping them develop their own spiritual gifts and calling in Christ. He should desire to see ministry cultivated, not controlled.

    ● Encourage and enable healthy relationships and communication within the English congregation as well as between the Cantonese and Mandarin congregations.

    Requirements and Qualifications

    ● A personal and family life that reflects 1 Timothy 3.1-7, Titus 1.5-9, Acts 20.28, and 1Peter 5.1-4. Demonstrating their ability to exercise self-care with a rhythm of work, worship and leisure, engagement, and retreat for self and family. They are expected to take time to become good neighbors to those in the community where they live.

    ● Enjoys working collaboratively and cooperatively cross culturally and cross-congregationally with a sense of humor and possessing genuine humility.

    ● Has graduated from an accredited seminary or theological school with an undergraduate degree in a ministry related field. A M.Div. or equivalent degree is preferred.

    ● At least 5 years of relevant pastoral experience in an urban, North American setting having gifts in strategic and creative planning as well as gifts of teaching in formal and informal contexts. Experience working in a multi-disciplinary staff environment would be an asset.

    ● Fluent in English with excellent written and oral communication ability.

    ● Possesses cross-cultural gifts and/or experience either overseas or in North America.

    ● Ordained or willing to undergo the licensing/ordination process of the Evangelical Free Church of Canada.
